Russian lessons online

Every lesson is 60 minutes over video. You need a computer with a camera and microphone, headphones and a quiet place. A tablet works too. A phone is fine in a pinch, but everything is small.

What we use

Google Meet
The video lesson. Nothing to install: the link comes with your booking confirmation.
A shared Google Doc
Your lesson notebook. New words, phrases and corrections go in during the lesson, and the document stays with you for good.
Excalidraw whiteboard
Case tables, verbs of motion, diagrams. We draw them together in real time.
Personal flashcards
After every lesson I make a flashcard set, like Quizlet, from your own words and your own mistakes. Fifteen minutes a day, and the words stick.

Who the lessons suit

Complete beginners
Not a single Russian letter yet? That's fine. You'll read your first words in the very first lesson.
People who understand but freeze
You can read and follow, but when it's your turn to speak, nothing comes. In my lessons, you do most of the talking.
People with a goal
A move, an exam, a partner's family, work, a trip. Tell me the goal and the programme is built around it.
People who like to see the system
If "why" helps you more than "just remember this", you'll like grammar explained as diagrams.

Who I'm not the right teacher for

The honest part. I'm not the right teacher for you if you:

  • want Russian in a month with no effort;
  • don't want to speak out loud from the first lesson;
  • can't study regularly: at least once a week, ideally twice.

It's fairer this way: inside that frame, the result is predictable.

Every lesson includes

  • 60 minutes over video
  • Corrections while you speak, not afterwards
  • A shared lesson notebook that stays with you
  • Personal flashcards after every lesson
  • Homework for 15 minutes a day

Common questions

Do I need to know the Cyrillic alphabet first?

No. The first lesson starts with six letters you already know, and ten minutes in you're reading your first words on your own. If you can already read, we go straight to conversation.

What language do you explain things in?

The lesson runs in Russian as far as your level allows. When you need an explanation, I switch to English or Finnish.

I don't know my level. Where do I start?

Take the test. It takes three minutes, and at the end you pick a time for a free 20-minute call. By then I'll already know your level and goal, so we spend the call on a plan, not a questionnaire. If you do know your level, just book a lesson.

How do I cancel or move a lesson?

Up to 24 hours before it starts it's free: use the link in your confirmation email or message me. After that, the lesson counts as taken.

How long until I can hold a conversation?

It depends on where you start and how regularly we meet. You'll speak in the very first lesson. Simple everyday conversations usually take a few months of regular lessons: twice a week, plus 15 minutes a day at home.

Why a tutor rather than an app?

An app can't hear your pronunciation or ask you a follow-up question. In a lesson you speak, I listen and correct, and we spend the time on exactly what you find hardest.

Are lessons recorded?

No. A lesson is only recorded if we both agree to it.

Can my child take lessons?

Yes, as long as a parent books and pays. Message me before booking and we'll talk about the format.

Which time zone are the times in?

The booking calendar shows times in your own time zone automatically. I work on Helsinki time.
